As the kids say, Whoomp! Here it is! It’s the first show of my new podcast. I can’t believe it’s finally out. Hurrah!

Jaq Greenspon

In this show I interview freelance writer (and old friend) Jaq Greenspon who writes about an amazing variety of things: first he’s on the red carpet talking with Teri Hatcher, then he’s writing about people who build apparatuses for magicians.

I’d like to see more videos of domestic animals industriously destroying large inanimate objects!

You know, the red panda is on a fast track to becoming one of my favorite animals. As you can see from this Cute Overload post, it’s making all the right career moves.

In which I realize that I have to become a Sound Guy July 19, 2007

The good news is that the site for my upcoming podcast, Writing For Pay, is up!

Actually, I don’t really have bad news. Bad news would be financial calamity, illness, unemployment. My “bad news” is that I thought I’d finished editing the first episode of the podcast last night, but upon listening to it I realized that it needs a lot more work.

I recorded all of my interviews with my portable iRiver MP3 player/recorder. I recorded the rest of the show using a Logitech USB mic plugged into my iBook. I also spliced in transitional music recorded using I know not what equipment and settings.

The levels and…I don’t know quite how to describe it, the texture of the sound? were very different for each track. The stuff recorded using the USB microphone had a “cleaner” sound, I guess, but the iRiver’s output was much richer, warmer. The mic stuff sounds quiet and a little stifled.

I’m going to dive back into Audacity and see if I can figure out how to harmonize all of the different elements. If I can’t make it work I think I might re-record all of the non-interview segments using the iRiver.

It probably has something to do with the fact that I bought the microphone that I could afford at the time - that is, the cheapest one available.

This is the least attractive aspect of the process to me, but there’s just no getting around it.

WordPress, Linux, Windows, and GoDaddy July 17, 2007

Last night I got the debit card for my new bank account, dedicated to my nerdy Web projects. I immediately purchased a hosting plan from GoDaddy, and this morning attempted to install WordPress. I got the error, “”Your PHP installation appears to be missing the MySQL which is required for WordPress.”

Crap!

However, a quick search of the WordPress support forums revealed the truth of the old axiom “When you fail to prepare, you prepare to fail.” Given the choice between Windows-based and Linux-based hosting, I’d opted for Windows. The trouble is, Windows-based hosting doesn’t support PHP. So I need to switch operating systems.

However, the hosting setup is apparently still churning on GoDaddy’s servers and I can’t switch until it’s finished. Which is fine, I’m not in a hurry. I’m just eager to get it done.

Interviews with talented writers Jaq Greenspon, Wolfgang Baur, and Zia Munshi are in the can. The first episode of the Writing For Pay podcast is almost finished - I just need to tweak my intro a little more and record a final segment. Then I’ll switch operating systems, set up WordPress, sign up for AdSense, configure the Blixkrieg theme, upload the audio files, pipe them to iTunes, and start promoting the ‘cast.

And I need to create a 300×300 graphic for the show, or pay/persuade someone to do it for me.

Wow. That’s a lot of writing about the relationships of fictional characters

Wade says:
Or “ships” as they are apparently called.

Wade says:
“Two of the biggest rivals dealing with Ships are the Ron/Hermione shippers and the Harry/Hermione Shippers. Each group believes beyond a doubt that they are right and most refuse to listen to anyone who believes differently. Things between these two groups often get extremely ugly.”

Tirzah says:
WHAT? Harry and Hermione together is just stupid.

Tirzah says:
And anyone who thinks otherwise is also stupid

When J.P. and Gwyn’s wedding was over on Saturday, Angela, Debi, and I crept back into the nave and hung the artwork for our upcoming exhibition Speaking in Tongues: The Spirit Unleashed.

The pieces look great together. I think this is a really strong show.

The opening reception is Thursday evening from 6 PM to 8 PM with live music from 7 to 7:30. Here’s a map, if you’d like to come!
