Wireless connectivity enrages me (The Apple vs. Wintel edition)

11 Nov

I know intellectually that the sun does not shine out of Steve Jobs’ posterior. And yet when an Apple product doesn’t perform as well as a competitor’s, I feel devastated. Betrayed, even.

At home, I connect to the Internet through DSL using an Apple AirPort Graphite Wireless Base Station.

What I hate, what drives me absolutely batshit insane, is that the connection on my Dell laptop from work, running Windows XP, is faster and more reliable than that of my iBook running OSX.

I don’t know what’s up with that. If something’s wrong, I don’t know how to troubleshoot it. Like many a consumer, I bought an iBook so I wouldn’t have to think about such things. Silly (l)user.

UPDATE: It appears that the iBook’s connectivity problems occur after I wake it up from sleep mode. If I boot it up after it’s been shut down, response seems a lot faster, if still a tad slower than it is on the Windows machine. I never put my Windows laptop to sleep, because nothing works right afterward. Maybe sleep mode is teh sux0r.

My laptop goes on sleep mode after 2 hours — and when I wake it up, my printer never works. To make it work, I have to unplug the printer, power it all down, replug, and keep my fingers crossed. What’s up with that?!?

And you’ve dashed my illusions because I’ve been thinking, “If I had a mac, I wouldn’t have these problems … “
