I took this photo of the open gaming hall at Strategicon‘s Gateway convention in 1987, when I was 20 years old. A friend and I went there on a road trip from my home town of Las Vegas. During that weekend we lived almost entirely on a loaf of white bread, a jar of peanut butter, and a beef stick from a convenience store.
Gateway ’87 was my first experience with the larger gaming community, and I got to meet the people who created some of my favorite roleplaying games—most memorably, the staff at Chaosium.
Tomorrow, 30 years later, I’ll attend Gateway again as an RPG designer myself! On Saturday at 9 a.m. I’ll run Temple of the Sun Cabal, a 13th Age adventure I wrote for Pelgrane Press. There are still spots available at the table if you want to join: Here’s the full event list.
Hope to see you there!
May you not die of shock when you see what Open Gaming looks like now! ;)
