It’s that time of year again: tens of thousands of tabletop game enthusiasts are descending uponScreenshot 2018-07-30 16.39.43 Indianapolis for Gen Con! Pelgrane GM Huddle 6:00 – 7:00 p.m.

Location: ICC 241-242 If you’re running a game as part of the Pelgrane Press team, I’ll see you at the GM huddle along with Cat Tobin, Simon Rogers, Rob Heinsoo, Jonathan Tweet, Ken Hite, Robin Laws, Ruth Tillman, and others!


13th Age Adventure Design Seminar 11:00 a.m. – noon

Location: Lucas Oil : Mtg Rm 1 Rob Heinsoo, Jonathan Tweet and I will answer questions about adventure design for the 13th Age roleplaying game, and—if we keep to the tradition of past years—work with the audience to brainstorm a new adventure.

RPG: Ragnarok (DramaSystem) 2:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.

Location: ICC : 241–242 : 11 You are the gods of Asgard, your starships roving the galaxy in a desperate search for a new home. But even the universe’s death can’t quench your fiery passions, or heal the bitterness dividing you.

RPG: Blood Coda (Night’s Black Agents) 6:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m.

Location:ICC : 241–242 : 6 Take the fight against Dracula to the Royal Opera House as you confront one of his brides & her ballet company. Can your Edom team stop the British art scene falling under the master vampire’s sway?


13th Age Monster Design Seminar 11:00 a.m. – noon

Location: Lucas Oil : Mtg Rm 5  Rob Heinsoo, Jonathan Tweet and I will answer questions about monster design for the 13th Age roleplaying game, and perhaps we’ll work with the audience to create a new monster!

RPG: Perveniet Calix (DramaSystem) 2:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.

Location:ICC : 241–242 : 13 Working within MI6, Operation Edom works to use Dracula and his network to fight the global War on Terror. The vampires aren’t just killing terrorists, but Edom still protects their assets, and covers up the trail of corpses. As a sleeper cell of Edom agents, your secret life of danger and supernatural horror takes its toll. Rivalries, resentments, and desires grow stronger under the pressure of the job, until they threaten to tear you apart. Can you keep your cell intact, and survive the terrible ordeals to come? Is the cost worth it?


Fall of Delta Green: Operation ALADDIN’S CAVE 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.

Location: ICC : 241–242 : 7 It’s 1968, and your team of DELTA GREEN operatives has been assigned a mission in war-torn Vietnam—and a confrontation with cosmic horror. U.S. Marine Corps recently captured a Viet Cong tunnel complex in Quang Tri province near the DMZ. It is believed that they removed something from that tunnel complex, not least because the unit photographer died from an “accidental firearm discharge” two days later. That was three days ago. Your mission: investigate this possible outbreak of the unnatural, and prevent it from damaging the war effort, or the world, any further.

Create an episode from a mid-60s sci-fi TV series that never was! With DramaSystem, players collectively improvise a compelling story of emotional need and conflict within a tightly-knit group of people.

In this session inspired by the 1975 movie Escape to Witch Mountain, you play castaways from a doomed planet seeking safety and a new home in small-town central California. You must struggle to adjust as a community to this new world, find your fellow castaways, and keep your true nature a secret from your human neighbors.

The game includes collaborative character generation and setting development, but the GM will provide role-based character templates such as Captain, Elder, Teenager, Comic Relief, and Criminal.

Warlock Mtn

Strategicon, 30 Years Later

Photo Aug 30, 9 42 36 PMI took this photo of the open gaming hall at Strategicon‘s Gateway convention in 1987, when I was 20 years old. A friend and I went there on a road trip from my home town of Las Vegas. During that weekend we lived almost entirely on a loaf of white bread, a jar of peanut butter, and a beef stick from a convenience store.

Gateway ’87 was my first experience with the larger gaming community, and I got to meet the people who created some of my favorite roleplaying games—most memorably, the staff at Chaosium.

Tomorrow, 30 years later, I’ll attend Gateway again as an RPG designer myself! On Saturday at 9 a.m. I’ll run Temple of the Sun Cabal, a 13th Age adventure I wrote for Pelgrane Press. There are still spots available at the table if you want to join: Here’s the full event list.
