RPGs I’m running at Gamex 2018

7 May

Gamex2018I’m honored to be a special guest at Gamex 2018, taking place over Memorial Day Weekend (May 25-28) in Los Angeles. When I’m not running tabletop RPGs, I’ll be at the Pelgrane Press table in the dealer’s hall, where you can buy some of the games I’ve worked on. You can also find me at Friday evening’s meet and greet.

Here are the four-hour games I’m running—sign up to play here. Hope to see you then!

wreck-of-volunds-glory_coverFriday, 2:00 p.m. The Wreck of Volund’s Glory (13th Age)
A dwarven airship has crashed in the magic-blasted wastelands with a stolen magical artifact on board. Evade, outwit, or out-fight undead goblins, magic abominations, and rival adventurers to reach the prize! This adventure is set in the dark fantasy Midgard campaign setting from Kobold Press. No experience necessary, level 2 pre-generated characters provided.

temple-of-the-sun-cabal-cover_350Saturday, 9:00 a.m. Temple of the Sun Cabal (13th Age)
To save the world, sometimes you have to save a vampire—especially when they have information you need, and they’ve been captured by the not-so-friendly neighborhood sun cult! Getting to their island temple won’t be easy, though. Will you choose the Path of Battle, the Path of Cunning, or the Path of Welcome? No experience necessary, pre-generated characters provided.

Warlock MtnSunday, 9:00 a.m. The Secret of Warlock Mountain (Hillfolk/DramaSystem)
You are refugees from a doomed planet seeking a new home in small-town central California in 1965, where you must keep your true nature a secret from your human neighbors. But will the echoes of the past and the challenges of this new world push your relationships to the breaking point? Use collaborative storytelling and player vs. player interaction to play out exciting scenes of drama and interpersonal conflict.

loki-valkyrie-1014826-320x180Monday, 9:00 a.m. Ragnarok (Hillfolk/DramaSystem)
You are the gods of Asgard, your starships roving the galaxy in a desperate search for a new home. Sailing the black tides of the cosmos, will you find salvation in the void where armies of the hungry dead writhe endlessly beneath black suns? Or will your rivalries and jealousies tear you apart first? Use collaborative storytelling and player vs. player interaction to play out exciting scenes of drama and interpersonal conflict.

I’m Running 13th Age at Gen Con. Come Play!

10 May

13th Age logoPUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT: Pelgrane Press seeks GMs to run Night’s Black Agents, Ashen Stars, Trail of Cthulhu, 13th Age, Hillfolk, Esoterrorists, Dying Earth and other games at Gen Con – short demos and/or adventures. GMs will be compensated with store credit and swag. Interested? Let me know!

Gen Con Indy has posted its lineup of 2013 events. If you’re going, you can add the ones you want to attend to a wishlist and then officially register for them on the 19th.

I’m going to run two games of the 13th Age fantasy roleplaying game at Gen Con, and I hope you’ll join me:

Danger at Deathless Gulch (for Kobold Press)

Description:  Journey to the badlands of Midgard’s magic-blasted Wasted West to recover a magical tome from a crashed dwarven airship. This 13th Age adventure will use icons from the Midgard Campaign Setting.

I ran Danger at Deathless Gulch at Gen Con 2012 using the Old School Hack system, and it was a huge amount of fun. Switching to 13th Age is more than a matter of porting the characters and monsters over — 13th Age has completely different strengths, and I look forward to drawing on them to create a wholly different (but equally madcap) adventure.

Deep Gnome Rising (for Pelgrane Press)

Description: Lord Azbqiplth of the Deep Gnomes sets up court in a city of the Dragon Empire — and brings the Underworld’s madness with him! Choose your PCs’ backgrounds, uniques and icons, and go sort him out.

With this adventure I’m going to use the improv-heavy mode of 13th Age gamemastery, starting with the location: the characters’ icon relationships will determine where the Gnome King decides to set up his court. That’s all I’m ging to say about it for now, because I’m still working on the adventure.

I also hope to take in some panels this year and play a game of Night’s Black Agents, the vampire espionage game by Kenneth Hite. What are you looking forward to at Gen Con 2013?

New short story in Midgard Preview from Kobold Press

26 Oct

Midgard Preview coverMy very short story “At the Sign of the World Serpent” is one of two pieces of fiction in Midgard Preview, which you can download free from Kobold Press. DriveThruRPG named Midgard Preview the Free Product of the Week in the current issue of its e-newsletter.

The other piece of fiction in the book  is by best-selling author and award-winning game designer Jeff Grubb. The credits also include Ben McFarland, who just won a gold ENnie award at Gen Con, and Wolfgang Baur who is…well, he’s Wolfgang Baur. It’s an honor to be included, is what I’m saying.

It also makes me think that “Grubb and Rockett” would be a great name for a business in a steampunk story. Maybe they’d make rocket packs.
