13th Age: Assault on the Dungeon of the Pogonomancer!
Saturday, 2:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. The renegade dwarf wizard Owlbeard and his evil hordes have launched an attack on his former clan. Your mission: find the wizard’s secret lair deep in the underworld, and assassinate him before the dwarves are defeated! 3rd level pregens are provided, and at the start of the session you’ll personalize them with backgrounds, relationships, and a One Unique Thing. Those choices then shape the adventure!
Night’s Black Agents: The Van Helsing Letter
Sunday, 2:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. You are covert operatives waging a bloody shadow war against Dracula and his minions. Now you’ve discovered a letter from Van Helsing himself that reveals the existence of another powerful undead horror. Can you find and destroy the creature before Dracula brings it under his control? A supernatural spy thriller adventure powered by the GUMSHOE investigative system.
I’m honored to be a special guest at Gamex 2018, taking place over Memorial Day Weekend (May 25-28) in Los Angeles. When I’m not running tabletop RPGs, I’ll be at the Pelgrane Press table in the dealer’s hall, where you can buy some of the games I’ve worked on. You can also find me at Friday evening’s meet and greet.
Here are the four-hour games I’m running—sign up to play here. Hope to see you then!
Friday, 2:00 p.m. The Wreck of Volund’s Glory (13th Age)
A dwarven airship has crashed in the magic-blasted wastelands with a stolen magical artifact on board. Evade, outwit, or out-fight undead goblins, magic abominations, and rival adventurers to reach the prize! This adventure is set in the dark fantasy Midgard campaign setting from Kobold Press. No experience necessary, level 2 pre-generated characters provided.
Saturday, 9:00 a.m. Temple of the Sun Cabal (13th Age)
To save the world, sometimes you have to save a vampire—especially when they have information you need, and they’ve been captured by the not-so-friendly neighborhood sun cult! Getting to their island temple won’t be easy, though. Will you choose the Path of Battle, the Path of Cunning, or the Path of Welcome? No experience necessary, pre-generated characters provided.
Sunday, 9:00 a.m. The Secret of Warlock Mountain (Hillfolk/DramaSystem)
You are refugees from a doomed planet seeking a new home in small-town central California in 1965, where you must keep your true nature a secret from your human neighbors. But will the echoes of the past and the challenges of this new world push your relationships to the breaking point? Use collaborative storytelling and player vs. player interaction to play out exciting scenes of drama and interpersonal conflict.
Monday, 9:00 a.m. Ragnarok (Hillfolk/DramaSystem)
You are the gods of Asgard, your starships roving the galaxy in a desperate search for a new home. Sailing the black tides of the cosmos, will you find salvation in the void where armies of the hungry dead writhe endlessly beneath black suns? Or will your rivalries and jealousies tear you apart first? Use collaborative storytelling and player vs. player interaction to play out exciting scenes of drama and interpersonal conflict.
I took this photo of the open gaming hall at Strategicon‘s Gateway convention in 1987, when I was 20 years old. A friend and I went there on a road trip from my home town of Las Vegas. During that weekend we lived almost entirely on a loaf of white bread, a jar of peanut butter, and a beef stick from a convenience store.
Gateway ’87 was my first experience with the larger gaming community, and I got to meet the people who created some of my favorite roleplaying games—most memorably, the staff at Chaosium.
Tomorrow, 30 years later, I’ll attend Gateway again as an RPG designer myself! On Saturday at 9 a.m. I’ll run Temple of the Sun Cabal, a 13th Age adventure I wrote for Pelgrane Press. There are still spots available at the table if you want to join: Here’s the full event list.
